PLAYING MUSE TO NIKHIL THAMPI

They say when it rains it pours! Well, tonight the Rain Gods poured blessings by the bucket load upon the doorstep of designer Nikhil Thampi and his winter festive collection! Showcasing alongside Sidhartha Aryan and Aarti Vijay Gupta at The Dressing Room, Nikhil Thampi stood as solid and powerful as his latest collection while the city flooded all around him.

Guest after guest and media alike braved the torrential rain for a glimpse of this intriguing and relatively new talent who stood humbled by the attention and experience of it all. And I, his muse for the event, stood proud adorned in his conception. A high-neck velvet drape held together by gold-embellished sides split from top till toe and worn with casual brown slacks was a vision of elegance! I was told by his assistant Vidhi that he created this piece in the space of six hours in a mad rush before Lakme Fashion Week and it turned out to be the most sought-after piece in his collection and has been featured in several editorials!

This new collection is inspired by women survivors from all walks of life such as housewives, prostitutes, victims of domestic violence, street kids etc. Such a striking experiential theme that just one simple glimpse of his collection brought goose bumps all around. Having been asked by the media who he would like to see sporting his collections, he promptly mentioned Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Rahul Khanna!! More interestingly, his inspirations are rooted to Sabyasachi and Jean Paul Gaultier. Looking at his dramatic silhouettes and already distinguishable style it is easy to see how his inspirations have seeped through in his work!

Using his trademark gothic color palette, it was powerful to see hues of deep velvet green, rich maroon and gold soak through his compilation. Like the theme of survivor, new use of these colors amid the sea of his standard gothic palette brought out islands of depth, beauty and mystery... which was very befitting the man and his signature twist on all things mundane and everyday! This collection is chic, and as always, sexy and sensuous. Nikhil Thampi has a knack for using the most simple cuts and making every item of clothing, whether for his men or woman, damn sexy! I remember interviewing him for “I Love Style” with his last collection and learning of his fascination for the sexy backless garment. Well, it is interesting to see this collection continue the sexy backless trend but this time extending to the menswear!! Hello boys and hello innovation! Sexy is most definitely back if Nikhil has anything to say about it!!

It is very hard to believe that having no background in fashion and only having been at the game for a year, such powerful creations have been born from his hands! Way to go Nikhil! This is most definitely a designer to look out for and if you know fashion then you are going to have to get to know Nikhil Thampi!
